October 2026 model releases, and two rumors I could not verify
📅 October 31, 2026
🏷️ 📢 Industry News
October was busy. Labs shipped models you can actually talk about, and two other names showed up that I still can't confirm. I'm keeping the rumors in their own section so they don't get mixed in with the rest.
Google's Gemini 4 reached general availability. You can build on it now, and you can put it on a roadmap. If you've been holding a project until the model was actually out, that wait is over.
Meta released Muse Wonder, its first closed frontier model. The weights stay with Meta, and you use the model on their terms. If your setup depends on downloading a Meta model and running it yourself, Muse Wonder is a different kind of release.
Mistral released the weights for Large 4. You can take the model, run it on your own machines, and keep the file. Meta kept a frontier model closed this month, which makes the weight drop the one I care about more if you self-host.
DeepSeek and Moonshot both shipped new open-weight models. I don't have the model names, so I'm leaving a blank rather than guessing. [TODO: add model names.] Together with Large 4, that's three open-weight drops in one month, which is worth a look if you host models yourself.
Not confirmed yet
These next two are unverified. Both come from a single source, and I couldn't find them anywhere else. I'm not treating either one as fact.
One report says OpenAI has a new model called GPT-6.1. Another says Google has Genie 4, for real-time AI worlds. Names only. I don't have a date, a demo, or a second source.
I'll pick these up again if they check out.
